OK. So. Kelly was meeting a group of her friends at a local park to celebrate the Fourth with a potluck picnic and decided this would be a perfect time to make this cool cake we found online. (The recipe apparently was shared on a blog a few years ago by a girl in Seattle whose father came up with the idea for the cake many years ago.)
The cake, as you can see, is very tasteful. Simple and understated with a punch of color from the bright cake plate and decorous paper flag. (It's set off nicely against all the clutter on my kitchen counter, don't you think?)

But lo and behold, when the cake is cut open, diners discover the flag hidden within! The cake was good -- we used a ton of food coloring to make it -- but the real fun of the cake is the surprise when it is cut open. Of course, this only works once.

Cool, eh?

Never one to waste cake, I used the remaining bits of cake and frosting to create my own Independence Day cake. Mine, however, looked more like an igloo -- or Thunderdome.
So when my cake was cut open, guess what it looked like? A mess of cake pieces glued together with lots of frosting! It still tasted fine, just not quite as attractive. Boo hoo.

We ended up serving it to David and his friends last night, and they liked it just fine. As you can see, I used leftover Christmas crackers as small explosive treats for David and his guests to keep the party hopping.
So guess which cake I had for breakfast with my coffee this morning?
That's right. So good. Happy Fourth of July! Back to international reporting soon!
